American Education Week is here! Monday, November 15 marks the beginning of a full week to celebrate all things public education! And, during a time where the entire world seems to be under a cloud of stress, what better way than to take a moment and celebrate.

But, where did all this come from? Why do we celebrate American Education Week? Well, first of all, did you know the first year of celebrating American Education Week was actually 1921, so exactly 100 years ago?! That’s right! This year marks 100 years of highlighting all things public education. In 1919, the American Legion and National Education Association were “distressed that 25 percent of the country's World War I draftees were illiterate and 9 percent were physically unfit,” and sought ways to garner public support for education...enter American Education Week.

BEA is certainly ready to kick off the week to celebrate this week. Here are some of the fun-tivities we have planned for the week:

🍩Monday, November 15 - Donut Fix Day. We will start off the week by providing Donuts and Coffee for staff to show our appreciation because “We Donut Know What We’d Do Without You.”

☕️Tuesday, November 16 - Family Day. Families of staff and students are encouraged to come and eat breakfast at school beginning at 7:30 am. Breakfast will be served in Pemberton Auditorium at the K7 building and in the Commons at the HS.

🙌Wednesday, November 17 - Wellness Wednesday for staff during Professional Development time.

🧑‍🏫Thursday, November 18 - Educator for a Day. Staff members have the opportunity to switch roles with another staff member for the morning or afternoon to try their hand at something new.

👞Thursday, November 18- Students can dress as their favorite school employee.

📜Friday, November 19 - Proclamation Day. On this day, Substitutes from here on out will be referred to as “Guests.” Guest Teachers, Guest Paraprofessionals, Guest Bus Drivers, Guest Food Service Workers, etc. We appreciate their presence in our buildings and the work they do to keep us functioning.

While we have certainly made progress in both academic and physical education, spending the last 18+ months in a global pandemic sure calls for a time to focus on positivity and celebrations wherever possible. As such, we hope that you will join us in celebrating our school family and know that all are invited to join us for a breakfast treat on Tuesday, November 16 since we take pride in recognizing the importance of our community family!
