Health Matters

American Heart Month  Every February we honor the work done by our hearts (all day, every day!). Here are a few ideas to help take care of our hearts.

  • Commit to moving your body, someway, somehow, every day!
  • Increase your fruit or vegetable intake - try for one extra fruit or veggie each day
  • Get enough sleep
  • Don’t smoke!
  • Know your numbers (blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, blood sugar/blood glucose)
  • Learn: American Heart Association’s Warning Signs of a Heart Attack

United Hospital District Clinics

All UHD Clinics will be offering FREE cholesterol & glucose screenings the entire month of February, with no appointment necessary.  This is a great way to “know your numbers,” and get a peek at your heart health!

Every Monday: Winnebago Clinic 7:30am-9am

Every Tuesday: Wells Clinic 7:30am-9am

Every Wednesday: Blue Earth Clinic 7:30am-9am

Every Thursday: Fairmont Clinic 7:30am-9am

Anyone wishing to participate should be fasting prior to their arrival at their UHD Clinic location, with nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before.  Results will be mailed to participants.

Heart health facts A few fun heart facts from Cleveland Clinic:

  • Happiness and a strong sense of emotional vitality help lower our risk of heart disease.
  • The blue whale has the largest heart- weighing over 1,500 pounds!
  • The first heart cells start to beat as early as 4 weeks
  • Our hearts beat about 100,000 times per day.
  • The heart pumps blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels.

We can help control our heart health through diet, exercise and stress management.
